Inside Universal Horror Unleashed: Las Vegas’ New Year-Round Horror Experience

It’s fog season, ghouls. But this year, the final night won’t feel so final.

Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to check out Universal Horror Unleashed, a brand-new, year-round horror experience from the minds behind Horror Nights. Based in an AREA15 warehouse just off the Las Vegas Strip, Horror Unleashed delivers a highlight reel of your favorite horror experiences all under one roof.

The Lore Behind the Fog

As the story goes, the Universal Horror creative team had a storage warehouse just off the Las Vegas Strip to house the old haunted props and sets from their Hollywood productions. As time went on, the barrier between our world and the “Shadow World” (for longtime HHN fans, the Legendary Truth group is involved) weakened, and creatures emerged.

From the second you enter the building, you know you’re entering a haunted, semi-abandoned space. A loud warning and alarm play on repeat, cautioning visitors of the dangers that await them. A photographer takes your group’s picture, just in case someone goes missing inside. You’re immersed in a darker world before security even checks your bag.

The Residents Are Dying to Meet You

Whether you’re a fan of HHN specifically or you just love the horror genre, Horror Unleashed has a healthy mix of original characters and beloved franchises. Like a traditional scare event, Horror Unleashed boasts scare zones and mazes alike.

If you love streetscape entertainment, Horror Unleashed is lined wall to wall with themed zones. The Dead Storage Area appears first like an area of loose crates and props, but it is home to a coven of vampires, with their Vampire Queen available to greet guests. The Kill Vault connects a bar and a quick-service dining area and features an assortment of creepy characters, ranging from a human-sized praying mantis to a caged slasher. The Prop Graveyard serves as the passageway to Jack’s Alley and the Premiere House, allowing you to browse antiques; some may really jump out at you. Jack’s Alley is home to everyone’s favorite clown hosts, Jack and Chance, in a circus-inspired setting.

While these four zones are certainly reminiscent of traditional scare zones, what distinguishes them most is their emphasis on character interactions, not just scares and runs. To meet the Vampire Queen, you must first state your intentions to her guard. After his mini-performance, I had an extended conversation with the Carney character. Jack and Chance have a designated meet-and-greet line and a photographer. The life-sized praying mantis, affectionately known as Bug Guy, followed me around The Boiler for a bit. Several characters chatted with patrons of The Boiler and Roughcuts, too. My meal at Premiere House featured a performance and an exclusive meet-and-greet with M3GAN. The contained, less-packed environment lent itself to a focus on engagement rather than quick scares (though plenty of jumpscares are possible, too).

Hear Those Screams?

For those who want the full jolt, the mazes should be added to your bucket list. Universal Monsters brings the studio’s classic horror films to life. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Blumhouse’s The Exorcist: Believer immerse you in the slasher and supernatural worlds you loved on screen, while Scarecrow: The Reaping takes a more psychological twist as an original concept. Unlike the mazes you might be accustomed to, groups enter in pulses rather than a continuous flow, creating more terrifying scares that make your party the main character. As permanent indoor fixtures rather than seasonal setups, these mazes are significantly more detailed and offer a few special surprises.

Sink Your Teeth In

Horror Unleashed continues the Universal Destinations legacy of legendary eats, offering a diverse menu that truly rounds out the attraction as a full night-out experience. The Boiler and Jack’s Alley are traditional bars with bold themes, each with a distinct menu. Roughcuts is comparable to a theme park quick-service option, with a grab-and-go window for handheld plates and self-serve tables that may encounter some unexpected guests. Premiere House is the destination’s full-service restaurant and bar, designed with props and decor from the Blumhouse universe to build a full atmosphere. Premiere House accepts, but does not require reservations; I was able to walk up with no wait on my visit in early March.

Choosing to make a full night of our experience, my family opted to dine at Premiere House. After years of waiting to try the HHN-famous street dish, I ordered two pizza skulls, and they didn’t disappoint. I also sampled my table’s popcorn chicken tacos, which were literally topped with popcorn; Texas Chainsaw pizza with an actual chainsaw-patterned edge; and fried chicken sliders, whose black buns reminded me of the blood orange chicken from Epic Universe’s Das Steakhaus. There were a few desserts that caught my attention, but I was too stuffed to order.

It’s Not Sin City Without a Show

How can you visit a city like Vegas without seeing a show? Granted, the stage offerings are nowhere near the scale of Cirque du Soleil or even Nightmare Fuel, but there is still staged entertainment that embraces Vegas’ show culture. Jack & Chance: Stay or Slay highlights everyone’s favorite ringleaders, Jack and Chance, as they force two Vegas entertainers to perform for their lives alongside the Mayhem, their troupe of dancers. The acts rotate from acrobatics to juggling, and audiences even have the chance to participate onstage by scoring the performances they just witnessed. While the show is brief, you do have the unique opportunity to meet the masters of mayhem for a photo op after the final bow.

If you visit near a major holiday or franchise release, you may get treated to bonus entertainment. During my visit, a killer doll dance number filled the overhead rafters between Stay or Slay and the photo op. Last Christmas, a Krampus & Kin special event included a twisted holiday parade with dancers, processionalists, and narrators. The release of Resident Evil included a limited-time pre-show and an escape room featuring characters from Raccoon City. These special extras are usually announced on social media first, so beware of Horror Unleashed’s Instagram!

Save the Surprises for Inside

You may not want to know what’s lurking around the dark corner, but you may want to be familiar with a few travel basics before your visit.

Horror Unleashed is located in Zone 2 of AREA15. Garage parking is available within walking distance of the building. While the experience is generally unfit for children under 13, AREA15 restricts access to minors at certain times of the week and has a chaperone policy. While tickets have a timed entry window, you can stay as long as you’d like. The last available entry to the attraction is two hours before closing. You cannot re-enter the experience should you need to exit for any reason.

As you might expect, costumes are subject to the property’s costume policy. Masks, outside food and beverages (except for religious or medical needs), and bags over 12” x 6” x 12” are not permitted. Lockers are available for $8 per day. If the gift shop isn’t your last stop and your purchase doesn’t fit in your personal bag, the merchandise team will hold it at the register until you exit, as merchandise cannot be taken into the experience. Likewise, food and drinks from inside Horror Unleashed cannot be taken outside into AREA15.

Wheelchair and ECV rentals are not available on site, but the space is accessible to wheelchairs and standard-sized ECVs without requiring a transfer, including all haunted houses and queues. Those sensitive to special effects should be aware that lasers, strobe lights, synthetic fog, and high-intensity sound are present.

Visit if You Dare

Whether you’re looking for something to do one evening in Las Vegas or trying to capture the fog vibes beyond haunt season, Horror Unleashed deserves a spot on your to-do list. For those looking to take in the atmosphere without any big scares, the Fraidy Cat ticket provides access to the entertainment, dining, and merchandise offerings, but excludes entry to the haunted houses for a reduced cost. General admission tickets are available with single and unlimited entry to the four haunted houses. VIP Experience packages serve groups of up to six ghouls hoping for exclusive hospitality perks. Not sure how much you’ll want to do? You can revisit the box office after entry and upgrade your ticket type at any time.

Discounts are currently available for Nevada residents, active and retired military, and current college students. Additional promotions do pop up; my visit was during a sale period when Fraidy Cat tickets were only $19.

Not planning on making it to Vegas anytime soon, but developing a fear of missing out? A second location in Chicago is slated to open in 2027, with additional locations in American cities rumored to be announced soon. It may not be confirmed or official, but I’m still manifesting that Jimmy Fallon’s Tonightmares was an audience test for an inevitable New York attraction.
